Black History Month 2021

Black History Month 2021

October is Black History Month, the annual commemoration of the history, achievements and contributions of black people in the UK. Read our story today on the month and how you can get involved to help raise awareness across our Society.

What is Black History Month?

October is Black History Month in the UK. This is the annual national celebration that gives us an opportunity to reflect upon the history, achievements and contributions of those of African and Caribbean descent in the UK. Black History Month originated in America and was first observed in the UK in October 1987. This was pioneered by Akyaaba Addai-Sebo who was a Special Projects Coordinator of the Ethnic Minorities Unit at the Greater London Council (GLC).

Why is it important and why do we celebrate it?

People of African and Caribbean descent have been a fundamental part of our society and history for centuries with continuing contributions to this day. However, a YouGov Poll has found that 50% of black Britons experience workplace racism. Statistics such as this emphasise the importance of Black History Month so we can share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture in the UK. We can also learn more about the effects of racism and how to challenge negative stereotypes as 25% of people find that assumptions are made on their abilities, character or behaviour due to their race.

What to look out for this month?

This year The Black History Magazine have launched a #Proudtobe campaign “inspired by Black Lives Matter and invites Black and Brown people of all ages throughout the UK to share what they are Proud To Be. Making Black History Month 2021 personal and unique to individuals, families and communities, focusing on how we’re all making history all the time in our own ways, as well as the contributions and achievements of Black and Brown people throughout history. By asking people to share what they are Proud To Be we can share both individual stories and the vast richness of diversity that Black and Brown people bring to the UK.”
